Back pain is a common problem that can cause many limitations in daily life. In general, back pain can be divided into two categories: acute back pain and chronic back pain. But what exactly is the difference between these complaints? You can read about it in our blog!
What is acute back pain?
In acute back pain, you suddenly experience pain in the lower back. This feeling is often described as if it 'shoots in'. Usually, acute back pain is caused by overexertion. This can be caused, for example, by excessive lifting, incorrect posture or unilateral strain. Acute back pain is also more common in people in physically demanding jobs. Sometimes this pain can be caused by sitting in the same position for a long time. In addition, the pain can radiate from the back to the hip, buttock and upper leg. The pain comes on suddenly and usually disappears within a few weeks.
What is chronic back pain?
Back pain is often called chronic if the pain persists for more than three months. Chronic back pain can have several causes and does not only arise from physical factors. A common cause is overuse, such as heavy work or intensive sports practice. Improper posture, such as sitting on a chair for long periods or incorrectly, can also contribute to the development of chronic back pain. In addition, injuries such as a herniated disc or fracture can also cause long-term symptoms.
Besides physical causes, chronic back pain can also be caused by psychological factors. Stress and tension can lead to increased muscle tension in the back, which can cause back pain. Finally, congenital defects such as scoliosis fall under chronic back pain.
How can back pain be treated?
Treatment of acute back pain
The best treatment for acute back pain is to take rest. It is also important to avoid strenuous activities. It is important to find a good balance in this. Do not take too much rest, because resting too much soon weakens the muscles in your back. This makes the back unstable and may aggravate symptoms. So try to keep moving, but gently.
Treatment of chronic back pain
Chronic back pain is best treated through physiotherapy. A physiotherapist can give you exercises that strengthen the back muscles, provide more flexibility and can improve your posture. In addition, manual therapy and massage can help reduce tension and improve mobility.
