Back pain is among one of the most commonly cited health problems, with nonspecific back pain taking the lead. Perhaps you recognise these complaints. Characteristically, they lack a clearly identifiable physical cause. These complaints are often unfairly considered minor. In this blog, we delve deeper into this topic and highlight why it is crucial to take these complaints seriously.
What are nonspecific back problems?
Do you sometimes experience pain in your (lower) back? Non-specific back pain occurs when the cause of the pain cannot be clearly identified. Research has shown that an imbalance between load (the force on the back) and load capacity (the body's ability to cope with the load) can play a role.
To better understand nonspecific back pain, it is useful to compare it with specific back pain. Non-specific back pain is all forms of back pain for which no clear diagnosis can be made.
Specific back pain | Non-specific back pain |
Clear moment of emergence | No clear moment of emergence |
Clear picture of complaints | Complaints may vary from day to day |
Aberrant features visible in photos | No anomalies visible |
This comparison highlights that nonspecific back pain is distinguished by its unclear origin and variable symptoms, as opposed to specific back pain with a clear diagnosis and visible abnormalities on examinations such as X-rays or MRI scans.
