We often think we exercise enough, but do we? According to research by the CBS revealed that only 44 per cent of Dutch people meet the exercise guidelines. The importance of exercise for the health of our bodies is clear. Therefore, in this blog, we explain why it is so healthy, what the exercise guidelines are and how you can easily apply it in your life.
Why is exercise so healthy?
Our bodies are made for exercise. Meanwhile, various medical research has shown that with insufficient exercise, we are at greater risk of all kinds of complaints and diseases, such as (severe) obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers and even depression. An inactive life reduces your life expectancy. Getting enough exercise is good for your overall physical and mental health.
What are the exercise guidelines?
Exercise is good, but moving more is better! According to the exercise guidelines, an adult should get 2.5 hours of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week. It is also recommended to do muscle- and bone-strengthening activities at least twice a week. Here, you can think of activities that involve loading the body with its own weight, such as climbing stairs or walking. But what exactly falls under the categories of light, moderate and high-intensity exercise?
- Mildly intense physical activity does not involve increased heart rate or accelerated breathing. Examples include washing dishes, playing music, chores around the house or yoga, for example.
- Moderate-intensity physical activity causes increased heart rate and accelerated breathing. Moderate-intensity activities include walking, cycling, trampoline jumping or horse riding.
- Someone who is heavily intensely physically active starts sweating and gets out of breath. Most active sports fall into this category (e.g. football, hockey, running, squash or cycling).
How can you make sure you exercise enough?
Tip 1 - Park your car further, take your bike and walk more often
An easy way to incorporate more exercise into your daily routine is to park your car a little further away from your destination. You can also consider using a bicycle more often or walking.
Tip 2 - Take the stairs instead of the lift
Do you live or work on a higher floor? Then opt for the stairs instead of the lift! Taking a few extra steps can contribute to your fitness and health. Every little effort counts!
Tip 3 - Do you sit a lot because of your work or hobby? Try standing for a while every half hour
Prolonged sitting is not conducive to our bodies. It is important to get up, stretch and stretch from time to time to keep your body fit and healthy. For example, take a short break to go to the toilet, get a glass of drink or water the plants.
