Every year, we see many sports injuries among winter sports enthusiasts. Not only do we see knee and ankle injuries, but also injuries to head, shoulders, back and even toes. If you are often on the ski slopes, you know that skiing or snowboarding gives you a wonderful kick. You want to hold onto that feeling for as long as possible. So you don't want an injury at all. How can you prevent injuries during your winter holiday? Our therapists have listed a few tips for you.
Knees suffer during winter sports
A common injury among skiers is a knee injury. These include a twisted knee, a torn cruciate ligament or even a dislocated kneecap. The knee is a fragile joint because it is complicated. Skiing puts a lot of strain on our knees.
Your head, neck and shoulders are also injury-prone
The risk of a fall is high while going down a ski slope. When making a fall, you may land incorrectly. Do you land incorrectly on your head? Then you may suffer a concussion. You may even suffer from this for months. Do you suddenly make a wrong move? Then your neck and shoulders may be affected.
Tip 1. Practice in a ski hall beforehand
Before going on winter sports, try practising in an indoor ski hall. This way, you can slowly get your body used to the movements you will make during winter sports.
Tip 2. Good preparation is half the battle to prevent winter sports injuries
During your winter sports holiday, you are constantly exercising. Often, your body is not used to that. It is therefore important that you are fit and well prepared for winter sports. This prevents muscle aches and nasty injuries. In addition, you will also get a dose of more energy. The great thing is that you don't even have to go to the gym to do this! What preparations can you make?
#Warming up
A good warm-up ensures that your muscles are properly warmed up. You can do this by jogging in place, for example. In this case, make sure that only the ball of your foot touches the ground. Try this for 1 minute, 10 seconds of which you jog at a faster pace. Repeat this 3 times.
#S Muscle strengthening exercises
Before going on winter sports, it is important that your muscles are prepared for what is to come. Some exercises you can perform at home for this are squats, planks and knee lifts.
Tip 3. Wear a helmet during winter sports
Are you not regularly on skis or a snowboard? If so, you may occasionally fall while skiing or snowboarding. Unfortunately, snow is not as soft as it seems and you can have a nasty fall. It is therefore advisable to wear a helmet to avoid a concussion.
