What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a modern treatment method within physiotherapy that aims to relieve muscle pain and tension through the use of thin needles. Unlike acupuncture, which has its origins in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is based on Western medical principles and specifically targets myofascial trigger points. These trigger points are sensitive knots in muscles that can cause pain both locally and in other parts of the body.
In dry needling, thin, sterile needles are inserted directly into these trigger points to normalise muscle activity, improve blood flow and reduce pain. The treatment may cause a brief muscle spasm or 'twitch' response, indicating that the trigger point is being treated effectively. Although some patients may experience a temporary increase in pain after treatment, most report significant pain relief and improvement in mobility.
At FRISKFYSIO Amstelveen, dry needling is often combined with other treatment methods such as exercise therapy, manual therapy and advice on posture and movement. This integrated approach ensures that clients not only experience quick relief from their symptoms, but also work on preventing future problems. The therapists at FRISKFYSIO Amstelveen are trained to understand the specific needs of each client and tailor the treatment plan accordingly, resulting in highly personalised treatment.
