What is hay fever?
Did you know that hay fever is a common problem in Europe, affecting as many as 1 in 8 people? The mucous membranes of the nose and eyes react allergically to pollen from grasses, trees and plants. Hay fever can manifest at any age and can cause various symptoms, including cold symptoms. The name 'hay fever' dates back to earlier times. People then made the association with hay because the symptoms occur during hay time, also known as the summer period when hay was harvested.
In what complaints can this manifest itself?
Hay fever can cause various symptoms, you may recognise some of the following symptoms:
- Irritation, burning or tearing of the eyes
- Coughing, often accompanied by a tickle in the throat
- Sore throat
- Breathing difficulties, such as tightness in the chest
- Fatigue
- Itching in the nose
- Sneeze
- A feeling of feverishness
What can you do about hay fever?
Hay fever is very annoying and you cannot avoid it completely. However, you can make sure that the symptoms remain limited. We have listed some tips for you.
- Avoid outdoor exposure on days with high pollen levels. During the day, keep windows closed and the indoor environment clean. This way, you can limit pollen levels in your home. See the hay fever radar To know how violently pollen levels get.
- Visit your GP. He or she can give you advice on how to deal with this allergy and can prescribe medication.
