The new year is the time for good resolutions. At our physiotherapy practice, we see daily how important a healthy lifestyle is, which is why we are happy to share practical tips to help you achieve your goals this year. That way, you can work towards a fitter and healthier life in 2025!
1. Set realistic goals
Good intentions often get bogged down by goals that are too big or vague. Set clear and achievable goals such as "exercise three times a week" instead of "exercise more." Start small, for example, with a daily 20-minute walk. This way, exercise will become a regular habit and you will gradually achieve more.
2. Choose movement that suits you
Keeping up your new routine will be easier if you choose something you enjoy. For example, choose walking, swimming, cycling or dancing. It doesn't have to be an intensive gym workout. Exercise you enjoy will keep you going longer and provide just as many health benefits.
3. Schedule set times in your calendar
Make exercise part of your schedule by setting aside set times. Choose times that fit well with your rhythm, such as a morning walk or a short workout after work. By scheduling this as a routine, it will become a regular part of your week.
4. Pay attention to good working posture
Healthy posture prevents strain and pain. Make sure your workplace is properly adjusted, especially if you sit a lot. Our physio practice will be happy to help you with advice on ergonomics and the best sitting posture to prevent back and neck pain.
5. Listen to your body
Don't start too hard to avoid injury. Listen to your body and take rest when necessary. Are you experiencing pain or stiffness? Give it a rest and consult a physiotherapist if necessary. Tackling complaints early will prevent them from getting worse.
6. Work on a strong core
A strong torso is the basis for good posture and prevents many complaints. Pay attention to your core muscles through simple exercises such as planks or balance exercises. Our physiotherapists can guide you through this with a tailor-made exercise programme.
7. Relax regularly
Relaxation is just as important as exercise. Schedule moments for yourself to relax such as breathing exercises or meditation. Relaxation contributes to your mental and physical well-being.
8. Hydrate and pay attention to your diet
A healthy lifestyle starts with the right diet and enough water. According to the Nutrition Centre it is important to drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily for proper hydration. In addition, a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits and proteins will help boost energy and support your body in recovery.
9. Strengthen your muscles responsibly
Muscle-strengthening exercises play an important role in maintaining strong joints, good posture and an overall healthy body. By exercising your muscles regularly, you can not only improve your strength, but also support your daily mobility and reduce the risk of injury. It is important to start slowly, for example with light exercises or simple movements, and gradually build up the intensity. That way, you will avoid overuse or unnecessary injuries. Our practice offers expert guidance to create a personal exercise schedule that is fully tailored to your current fitness level, goals and any physical limitations. This ensures that you are working on a stronger and more resilient body in a safe and effective way.
10. Enlist help where necessary
At our practice, we are here to support you. Do you want to get fitter, tackle an old injury or could use some help with your good intentions? We are ready to guide you with a programme that suits your goals and abilities.
