Every year, about 75% of runners experience a injury. This is quite a number, but there are also many different types of injuries. This makes it more likely that you will have to deal with one. Are you (unfortunately) familiar with having a running injury? Or are you an avid runner and curious to know what injuries there are and what FriskFysio can do for you? Then read on!
The most common running injuries
There are many different types of running injuries. The most common running injuries are in the feet and knees. We list five of them:
- Achilles tendinitis; The Achilles tendon is the tendon that runs from the calf muscle to the heel. If this tendon is inflamed, it is called Achilles tendinitis. Treatment for Achilles tendinitis is incredibly important. If you ignore the symptoms, there is a chance of a chronic injury.
- Heel spur; Heel spur involves a bright, sharp pain under your foot at the level of your heel. You feel this when you stand or walk. Heel spur usually develops gradually.
- Shin splints; With shin splints, you suffer from your shin. It is a collective term for various shin irritations. You can prevent it by exercising calmly and applying variation in your workouts.
- Jumpers knee; A jumpers knee or jumper's knee is an overuse injury. You can recognise the symptoms by pain at the bottom of the knee, stiffness/starting pain or swelling of the patellar tendon.
- Runner's knee; With a runner's knee, you suffer from pain on the outside of your knee. This pain occurs during or after running. With a runner's knee, it is important to get appropriate advice to prevent these symptoms in the future.
The causes of running injuries
Because there are many different injuries, there are also many different causes. Often you are dealing with incorrect posture that causes strain. Your running shoes may also be faulty or outdated. Of course, it could also be that you ran a little too fast in your enthusiasm.
