The internet is omniscient. In the enormous amount of information available, you can find an answer to any question. It is important, however, that you ask the right question and that you can judge the (often divergent) answers according to their value, so that you do not draw the wrong conclusions about your complaints or even start working with incorrect advice. With more and more people consulting Doctor Google for physical complaints and trying to figure out how to tackle these problems themselves, it is time to reflect on this phenomenon. Do you go to the physiotherapist for physical complaints or do you consult 'Doctor Google'? And is that wise?
The physiotherapist is the specialist
If you feel pain or have other complaints while moving, you might be quick to turn to the internet for advice. What could be going on and how do I take care of improvement or relief myself? The information on the internet is abundant and complete, but sometimes the advice given is contradictory or does not quite fit your personal situation. So which advice should you believe? And how can you be sure that the advised exercises are exactly right for your specific situation and will not make things worse? Correct interpretation of all that information requires knowledge of the human body in combination with your specific complaints. And Google cannot help you with that. As physiotherapists, we do have that specialist knowledge.
Physiotherapy doesn't just help with movement problems
A secondary concern of googling solutions is that you yourself are quick to look in the direction you already know. With movement complaints, it is logical to look in the direction of physiotherapy. But physiotherapy can also add value in conditions where you might not think of physiotherapy so quickly, such as Parkinson's and COPD. If you visit your GP with such complaints, he or she can make the right assessment and may well refer you to a physiotherapist.
Doctor Google as a resource
So pay attention when you use the internet to look for a solution to your complaints, because different causes can lead to the same complaints and certain complaints can be relieved in ways you would not think of as a layman. Moreover, there may be other things that affect your complaints that you wouldn't think of 1-2-3. The information you find on the internet about your complaints can give you insight into how to better describe them. This can help during a visit to our physiotherapy practice. Based on a physical examination combined with your description of your complaints, we can make a diagnosis and a treatment plan.
It is precisely this specialist knowledge of ours as physiotherapists that is necessary to make sure that the treatment and exercises are properly tailored to your situation.
Use the right sources
If you do want to take an active interest in your health and find out more about your symptoms, at least use sources you know are reliable. For example, consult our website, where you can find a lot of information about all kinds of physical complaints and the treatments we offer for them. We cannot stress it often enough: here, too, the correct interpretation of your complaints by a specialist is indispensable.
