28 May is here again: the summer break for many sports clubs. During this nationwide halt, no matches are played and there are no training sessions. So you can go on holiday or recover from an injury. Nevertheless, you want to be fit again after the summer. Our physiotherapist Keren has therefore gathered a few tips to keep your fitness up to scratch this summer.
Tip 1: Exercise with a tight schedule
For the real fanatics among us, it makes sense to exercise on a tight schedule. This is because by making a sports schedule, you ensure that you are working on your fitness on a daily basis. You can include different sports in the schedule, such as running, strength training or summer sports like cycling, surfing or swimming. You can make the sports schedule as intense as you want; for instance, you can plan something for every day, but even once every two days is enough to maintain your fitness level. Above all, make sure not to overexert yourself and take enough rest in between.
Tip 2: The more the merrier
It can be very difficult to motivate yourself during the summer break. You would obviously much rather sit with a glass of wine or beer on the terrace or in the backyard. Often, a sports buddy helps for extra motivation. Exercising together not only makes for more fun, but you can also keep each other motivated. However, it is important not to be too dependent on your sports partner. Is he or she not in the mood? Then work out on your own!
Tip 3: Pay close attention to your diet
Exercising outside in the sunshine is of course very nice, but it is also very hot. The hot weather makes you sweat a lot more, which makes it extra important to drink properly. Drink enough water in a day and pay extra attention to your diet. Your body can use some extra carbohydrates and proteins during busy sports days, so always try to add these to your meals. Products like vegetables, meat/fish, wholemeal products and nuts are high in protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates.
Tip 4: Don't make it too hard on yourself
Of course, the most important thing about the summer break is to enjoy your well-earned holiday. You can also keep fit during your holiday by swimming laps in the pool or going for a nice walk. Don't make things too difficult for yourself during the summer break. Do you normally only work out once a week? Then don't plan 5 days of sport, as this will only increase the risk of injury.
