Does your lower back also bother you from time to time? This pain is very annoying and can hinder you from carrying out your daily activities. As you get older, your bones slowly calcify and your spinal canal narrows. This narrowing is called lumbar stenosis and it can cause symptoms in the lower lower back and upper legs. In this blog, we will tell you more about this condition and provide tips to reduce these symptoms.
What is lumbar stenosis?
As we age, our body undergoes changes. Long-term strain on the body can cause narrowing of the spinal canal, which occurs in everyone as they age, but to varying degrees. We also call this osteoarthritis of the spinal canal. The narrowing of the spinal canal can lead to limited space in front of the vertebrae, which can put pressure on the nerves. People with a narrow spinal canal are more likely to have stenosis symptoms.
Pressure on the nerves can result in discomfort in the lower back, which can radiate to the upper legs. These symptoms often get worse after prolonged walking or standing. You may experience numbness in your legs, and pain in both your back and legs may become more intense.
What can you do to reduce symptoms?
Lumbar stenosis cannot be fixed but can be reduced. To reduce symptoms, you can sit down, bend forward or squat. It also helps to lie on your side with your legs raised. For more information on lumbar stenosis and exercises, we recommend watching the video below:
