FriskFysio has been working with the The McKenzie Method for some time. But what exactly is this? The McKenzie Method is a method for examination and treatment of spinal and limb pain. It was developed by Robin McKenzie from New Zealand and has been used worldwide for more than 30 years. The McKenzie Method has become known for its excellent results in lower back and neck pain (with or without radiation to legs or arms). Moreover, this method also gives good results when treating other joints, such as the shoulder and hip. The aim of the method is not only to make the symptoms disappear as quickly as possible, but also to ensure that they return as little as possible in the future!
What is the Mckenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method is an examination and treatment method that uses specific exercises, which you can also (continue to) do independently. If necessary, this method is supported by so-called manual mobilisation techniques. It is not that you go through a machine like an MRI scan but a (series of) exercise(s) specifically designed for your symptoms.
Purpose of the Method
The Mckenzie Method is suitable for back pain, among other things. Back pain often gets worse when you make certain movements. In some cases, it is even so bad that the pain radiates to other parts of the body. With McKenzie therapy, a clear picture of the complaint is drawn based on a comprehensive movement examination. In short, the goal of this therapy is to make complaints disappear as quickly as possible while ensuring that they return as little as possible in the future.
Complaints where McKenzie therapy can help
McKenzie therapy is used for a variety of complaints where the cause is often unclear. Here you can think of:
- headache
- complaints after an accident
- long-term back pain
- arm or leg pain
- shoulder complaints
- lumbago and acute neck pain
- radiating pain in arm, leg, buttock, shoulder area
- whiplash
Treatment
During the Mckenzie Method, our physiotherapist will look with you for movements that aggravate or reduce your complaint. Typical of the McKenzie Method are actions that are often repeated. Our physiotherapist will also look for radiating pain. This pain is centralised through active movements. This means that the pain in the arms or legs decreases and the pain recedes to the back, for example. After a clear diagnosis, the treatment starts focusing on your self-reliance. You will learn to improve your symptoms with just a few simple exercises and in this way recover as quickly as possible. In addition, our physiotherapist will pay attention to your posture and movements in daily life.
