Imagine: it is a cold autumn day, the air is crisp and the leaves are falling from the trees. You have been suffering from winter back pain for a while and notice that the cold is suddenly creeping into your bones. Does the cold weather make your back pain worse? This question is not uncommon, especially for those who are familiar with back pain and tension, or perhaps have even had a herniated disc.
Increased risk of back pain in winter
The pain in your back may increase as muscles become stiffer in cold conditions. In particular, the muscles around the spine can become tighter and tense. This increased tension can lead to worsening pain and a greater risk of muscle strain and sprains.
Inactivity is also a big culprit
Another factor contributing to back pain in winter is inactivity. With the temptation to stay indoors and snuggle under a blanket, we are less inclined to stay active. The lack of exercise can lead to weakened muscles and reduced flexibility. This increases the likelihood of back pain.
Dark days
Moreover, the darker winter days can affect our mood and well-being, which can indirectly affect back pain. The shorter days and reduced exposure to natural light can lead to the so-called 'winter blues', making us feel less inclined to be active.
What can you do yourself to make the winter period as easy as possible?
Fortunately, it is possible to prevent back pain in winter by preparing yourself properly for the cold temperatures. For this, we have three tips.
Tip 1. Wear warm clothes
Dress warmly and use the layering method. Several thin layers of clothing can keep you warm better than one thick layer. Make sure your lower back is well covered. Tuck your shirt into your trousers to prevent your back from getting cold when you stretch or bend down. Wear a jumper over your shirt, this way you have multiple layers of clothing. At night, extra blankets or even an electric blanket on your bed can help prevent your muscles from tightening.
Tip 2. Use good footwear
Wear good shoes or boots. Your winter shoes should have tread to prevent slipping and falling. You can buy a set of cleats to fit over your shoes to keep you confident in freezing weather.
Tip 3. Stay active
It is important to keep moving. Get off that sofa and take a walk or go to the gym. This will keep yourself warm and your body supple. Planning to go outside for a walk? Then we recommend getting a good warm-up to do.
