Are you an avid skier? Then you have probably heard of the ski thumb. In skiers, this injury is often caused by a fall, where the thumb gets stuck behind the ski pole. This is how the name originated. But this injury can also occur in ball sports, when the ball hits an outstretched thumb at high speed. In this blog, we discuss what it is, how to recognise it and how we can guide you on the road to recovery.
What is a ski foam?
A ski thumb occurs when the ligament on the inside of the thumb, also known as the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), is damaged. This injury can occur as a result of a fall where the thumb is abruptly pushed outwards, such as while holding a ski pole or breaking a fall with the hand. The result is a strain or tear in the ligament, leading to pain and swelling. Sometimes this injury is missed because it is thought to be a contusion.
If a skiduim is not treated appropriately, it can affect the functioning of the thumb. It is important to seek medical attention immediately when symptoms of a skier's thumb (see below) occur. With proper treatment and care, patients can expect a full recovery and return to using their hand as normal.
Symptoms of a skier's thumb:
- Pain on the inside of the thumb: Patients often experience pain on the inside of the thumb, especially during movement or loading of the thumb.
- Swelling: swelling around the middle joint of the thumb may occur in response to the injury.
- Restricted movement: A skier's thumb can restrict movement of the thumb, making daily activities difficult.
The treatment of a skier's thumb
The treatment of a skier's thumb depends on the severity of the injury. If the ligament is torn, a brace or splint is usually used to rest the thumb. Afterwards, physiotherapy and exercises can be used to restore the thumb's mobility and stability. Tearing off the ligament often requires surgery. Together, we work towards a full recovery of your skier's thumb.
