Bursitis; you have probably heard of it or maybe you have suffered from it yourself. Bursitis is a condition that we often see in our practice and that our physiotherapists can help you with very well. Curious about how exactly such inflammation occurs and what we can do to help you get rid of your symptoms? Our colleague Bart Hoeven tells you in this blog!
What is bursitis?
Bursas are mainly found in bone parts that protrude, such as our elbows, knees, hips and shoulders. On these bones is a kind of 'pad', or bursa. Overuse can cause it to become inflamed. Overuse of the bursa can be caused, for example, by repeatedly making the same movement or by an accident. Bursitis often occurs in combination with tendinitis.
Symptoms of bursitis
- The joint feels painful and stiff
- Joint mobility is reduced
- Redness often develops on the skin around the affected joint
- Sometimes swelling around the joint is also visible
What can you do yourself in case of bursitis?
First of all, it is important to know that bursitis goes away on its own in many cases. To support the healing process, there are a number of things you can do yourself:
- Make sure you give the weight enough rest. Gently moving is good to prevent stiffness, but intensive exercise is not recommended.
- For pain, you can take short-time (anti-inflammatory) painkillers. Always consult your doctor, pharmacist or chemist about taking medication.
- In case of swelling, you can cool the joint with an icepack.
If your symptoms do not go away on their own, get progressively worse or you even develop a fever, it is wise to contact your GP. Sometimes it is necessary for a doctor to "drain" the bursa and give an anti-inflammatory injection of corticosteroids. In addition, a bacterial infection may also have developed in the inflammation.
How can physiotherapy help with bursitis?
Physiotherapy for bursitis is mainly aimed at helping you move as painlessly as possible. Unfortunately, physiotherapy cannot make the inflammation disappear. However, our physiotherapist can help you identify the underlying cause of the inflammation. Thus, we will help you find adjustments or exercises to prevent new inflammation.
