The premiums of all health insurance policies have risen again for 2024. This is reason enough to compare health insurers again this year. It is important that you choose a health insurance that suits your personal needs and preferences well. How can you save and make sure you are properly insured if you need physiotherapy in 2024? We have figured it out for you.
Insured for physiotherapy in 2024
Do you want to continue using physiotherapy in 2024? Then pay close attention to how you are insured in 2023. All health insurers have once again increased the premium of their basic insurance and supplementary insurances. The group discount on health insurance has been abolished in 2023. On the website of the television programme Radar, we found a nice overview of the premiums and premium increases of basic insurance policies per insurer.
Basic insurance cover
Did you know that basic insurance coverage is the same among all health insurers? That is determined by the government. The difference lies mainly in the number of care providers you can go to without having to pay extra. This is because health insurers themselves choose which healthcare providers they contract.
So if you want to be sure you can make an appointment with the physiotherapist of your choice without paying extra, it is advisable to check this carefully before taking out the insurance.
Help comparing health insurers
Fortunately, there are a number of independent websites that make it easier for consumers to compare health insurers. We recommend using one or more of these sites to properly inform yourself so that you can make a well-considered choice. You will find them at the bottom of this blog.
Insured for physiotherapy in basic insurance
Basic insurance partially reimburses physiotherapy care. But, it does depend on your age and the reason you are receiving physiotherapy or exercise therapy.
For people with a condition on the government's list of chronic conditions, physiotherapy treatments are reimbursed from the 21st treatment from the basic insurance. You then pay for the first 20 treatments per disorder (i.e. not per year!) yourself. The level of reimbursement varies per health insurer. You may have supplementary insurance to also receive reimbursement for the first 20 treatments.
The Health Insurance Act lists these chronic conditions. This list contains many medical terms. You can also ask your health insurer, physiotherapist or exercise therapist if you have a condition that is on this list.
The treatments listed below are covered by the basic insurance:
- Treatment for temporary complaints in patients up to 18 years of age (9 treatments)
- Treatment for a chronic condition in patients up to 18 years of age
- Treatment for a chronic indication in patients aged 18 years and over from the 21st treatment.
- Treatment for etalage legs (up to 37 treatments over a year)
- Pelvic physiotherapy for urine leakage
- Osteoarthritis treatment (maximum 12 exercise therapies in one year)
- COPD treatment (varies per health insurer)
- Fall prevention in the elderly (new)
- Restorative care for Long Covid patients. These patients will still be reimbursed for their needed care in 2024. The government has extended this for another year until 1 January 2025.
When is supplementary physiotherapy insurance useful?
Whether you need supplementary health insurance for physiotherapy depends on your current care needs and the risk you are at for a condition. If you are an avid athlete and at higher risk of injury, then supplementary insurance is worth considering. If you often suffer from your back or have weak joints, it may certainly be wise to take out a slightly more expensive supplementary insurance.
Always ask yourself whether you want to pay for physiotherapy yourself if something happens, or whether you prefer to pay a (monthly) premium for it. There are no fixed rates for physiotherapy treatment. Still, to give an indication of what the average cost of a physiotherapist will be in 2024, you should consider €45 to €60 for a regular treatment. Specialised treatments such as manual therapy or paediatric physiotherapy cost a bit more.
No referral needed from GP
These days, it is no longer necessary to ask for a referral note from the GP to see a physiotherapist and be eligible for reimbursement.
How do you choose the health insurance that suits you best?
First check what care you will actually need in 2024. If you often use physiotherapy, it is highly recommended to have supplementary insurance. Grab your current policy and start comparing. Most health insurers reimburse a maximum number of treatments per year. Decide how many treatments you need, 6, 9, 12, 18 or 24.
Some health insurers do not calculate in number of treatments, but reimburse a maximum amount per year for physiotherapy. You can use our rates to calculate how many treatments you will be reimbursed.
Please note: the maximum reimbursement applies to all therapies together. So if you get reimbursed for a maximum of 12 treatments per year, this includes all treatments of the therapies the health insurer insures as 'physiotherapy'.

Tips to save on your health insurance
Increase deductible, yes or no?
Do you expect few healthcare costs next year? Then consider increasing your deductible voluntarily. With the basic insurance, you have a compulsory excess of EUR 385. This is the amount you pay yourself before your health insurer reimburses the costs. Do you opt for a higher excess? Then your premium will go down. You can choose a voluntary excess of €485, €585, €685, €785 or €885.
If you expect a lot of healthcare costs, increasing your deductible is not smart. Also, do not opt for a higher deductible if you do not have the amount of your compulsory and voluntary deductibles in your savings account. The excess does not apply if you use physiotherapy treatment from your supplementary insurance.
Some insurers ask for a health or medical certificate. They may reject you on that basis. Check this before taking out a policy.
In conclusion
You have until 31 December 2023 to switch health insurer/policy. It is definitely worth comparing the different policies from your point of view! You can use these sites to calculate which policy will be most interesting for you in 2024:
