As your age progresses, you may experience changes in your body. A common challenge is joint wear and tear, also known as osteoarthritis. This condition can cause significant impairments in daily functioning. Vitamin K can help delay this wear and tear. In addition, our physiotherapists are ready to help you when you suffer from osteoarthritis.
What is vitamin K?
Vitamin K, a fat-soluble vitamin, plays an essential role in our bodies. It is important not only for proper blood clotting, but also for building and maintaining strong bones. Long-term use of medication or certain intestinal diseases can lead to a deficiency of this vitamin. Fortunately, vitamin K is abundant in various foods. Green leafy vegetables are a rich source, but other foods such as fruits, dairy products, meat, eggs and cereals also contain this important vitamin. In principle, a varied diet should provide enough vitamin K. However, a deficiency of this vitamin can cause unpleasant symptoms, including:
- Spontaneous bleeding such as nosebleeds and gum bleeds;
- Hard-to-heal wounds;
- Excessive bruising;
- Heavy bleeding during menstruation;
- In the long run, even weakened bones.
How can vitamin K help with osteoarthritis?
A survey by Rheumatism Netherlands shows that there is a link between vitamin K and osteoarthritis. This study reveals that about half of people over 50 are deficient in vitamin K, which may lead to an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis. Studies are currently ongoing to determine whether vitamin K can help delay or even prevent the progression of osteoarthritis.
What else can you do about osteoarthritis?
We believe in the power of exercise in osteoarthritis. In a previous article, we discussed five practical tips to stay active even as osteoarthritis affects your life. One of our most valuable suggestions is to make small adjustments to your daily routine. Think about getting off public transport earlier or parking your car a little further away from your destination. This not only provides an opportunity to take extra steps during your daily activities, but it can also improve your mobility and overall well-being.
Step by step, literally and figuratively, you can maintain your mobility and better manage your symptoms of osteoarthritis. Remember that every step you take, no matter how small, can make a positive contribution to your long-term health and well-being.
