At New Year's Eve, while toasting, did you mention your good intentions for 2021? Many good resolutions have to do with a healthy(er) lifestyle. Going to the gym more, eating healthier, quitting smoking. Yet why is it so hard to keep them? The gyms are often packed in January, while many people quit by February. Recognisable? Because a healthy lifestyle is very important, we give you some tips to help you keep your resolutions this year!
Tip 1: One good intention at a time
If you have made several good resolutions, it is good to think about how much impact they might have on your life. Common resolutions like losing weight and quitting smoking take a lot of time. It will sometimes be difficult and you will have to get used to the adjustments. So rather focus on one resolution. This will make it achievable for yourself.
Tip 2: Break down your good intentions into small steps
When you have a goal in mind, you would prefer to reach your goal as soon as possible. The faster you get to your goal the better, at least... you think so, but this is not the case. Make it manageable for yourself. Start with a small period of, say, a week and keep extending this period by another week or several weeks. If you set and achieve intermediate goals, this works very well for your self-confidence and motivation
Tip 3: Reward yourself for achieving your resolutions
Agree with yourself that if you have kept your good intentions for a certain period of time, you may then reward yourself. Of course, it is important not to reward yourself with what your resolutions are about. For example: "After a month, I can smoke another cigarette". This does not contribute to your goals and may even cause you to relapse.
Tip 4: Don't drive yourself crazy in achieving resolutions
Don't get obsessed with your goal. Find a healthy balance in your motivation. Some days may not go as well as others. Certainly don't feel guilty about that. Tomorrow is a new day with new opportunities. If you expect less of yourself, you will find that the pressure decreases and you will also feel much more relaxed.
Tip 5: Have fun while achieving your resolutions
Want to exercise more and/or eat healthier? Then make it something fun! Go to the gym or go for a walk with a friend. Look for tasty recipes and make healthy versions of your guilty pleasures. You will see how easy it is to keep it up then!
